About the Program

The Knik Tribe Brownfields Program (otherwise known as the Tribal Response Program- TRP) is committed to identifying and pursuing the assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment/reuse of brownfield sites throughout the Knik Tribe’s service area.  This program is funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

What is a Brownfield?

Brownfields are essentially properties that are abandoned or underutilized because of the actual or perceived presence of contamination at the site.  Some common examples of brownfields sites here in Alaska are abandoned tank farms, illegal dump sites, old gas stations, canneries, and older buildings with lead-based paint or asbestos-containing materials.  These sites can lead to decreased property values and can negatively impact subsistence resources.

To be officially designated as a brownfield, a plan for redevelopment needs to be established.  Redevelopment could be reusing existing buildings for new purposes (like a community center or library), reusing the site for a new purpose (solar farm, community garden), or returning the land to its natural state for subsistence use.

Public Record

The Public Record contains sites at which a response action occurred in the previous year, or at which a response action is planned in the next year.  Response actions typically include activities such as assessment, characterization, or cleanup activities.
