


Knik Tribe Transportation Department
Vision
The Tribal Transportation Department’s primary responsibility is to assist the tribe in the improvement and maintenance of roads and bridges within communities in which its members reside. As outlined in its Tribal Transportation and Improvement Program, funds are provided for planning, construction, transit, and maintenance activities. The Tribal Transportation Improvement Program can include activities defined in 23 U.S.C. § 101 for transportation projects providing access to or within Federal or Indian lands.
The Tribal Transportation Program desires to develop, implement, operate, and maintain a cost effective, integrated transportation network. This network of existing and future facilities will provide safe and efficient access for the movement of persons, and goods within and through our Community. This network will foster and support an economic development while protecting the natural, cultural, and traditional environment.

Through innovation and partnership; we will strive to be a performance-driven organization committed to collaborating with internal and external partners to deliver a transportation department that strives for the standard of excellence in serving our tribal citizens.
Goals and Objectives for the Transportation Department include:

Complete update and revision of Knik Tribe’s Long-Range-Transportation-Plan (LTRP)

Update Knik Tribe’s Inventory of Roads to include road projects, including routes to tribal member properties for maintenance.

Identify road construction projects.

Participate in partnership planning with various Federal, Tribal, State, and Local Transportation units of government.

Provide Road Maintenance, Snow Removal and Transit Services to tribal members.

Participate as cooperating agency on Environmental Impact Statements.

Coordinate cultural resource mapping in ArcGIS for Knik Cultural Resources ArcGIS database.

Participate with tribes and the US Army Corp of Engineers on NEPA Section 106 process.

Provide various ArcGIS mapping services to KTC Departments and other clients.

Coordinate proposed Knik Housing Development of roads and driveways.

Provide consultation for Knik Tribe tribal enterprise and organizational development on roads and transportation related projects.

Provide impact assessment and tribal impact assessment related to municipal transportation projects within the Matanuska Susitna Valley.

Review US Army Corp of Engineers Permit Applications for proposed infrastructure projects affecting wetlands in the Matanuska Susitna Valley.

PROGRAMS
Transportation
Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Highway Infrastructure and BIA Indian Reservation Roads Program – funds to maintain and service the BIA road system (bridges, roads, ferry terminals, etc.) serve as major access for tribal communities through which services are provided or delivered to tribal members and the general public
DOT Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act)
“The FAST Act authorizes $305 billion over fiscal years 2016 through 2020 for the Department's highway, highway and motor vehicle safety, public transportation, motor carrier safety, hazardous materials safety, rail research, technology, and statistics programs. With its enactment, States and local governments may move forward with critical transportation projects, like new highways and transit lines, with the confidence that they will have a Federal partner over the long term.”
National Park Services
Historic Preservation Grant that funds KT’s archeological and cultural surveys.
USFWS Meadow Creek Fish Passage Improvement Project (Matanuska-Susitna Basin, Alaska)
The Knik Tribe, in partnership with the City of Houston and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) and through the assistance of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) to replace three undersized and failing culverts along the Cheri Lake tributary to Meadow Creek within the City of Houston, Alaska as part of a larger drainage and culvert improvement plan.
