Knik Tribe's Benteh STEAM Academy
The Benteh STEAM Academy is an innovative program developed by the Knik Tribe to empower students with hands-on, culturally enriched educational opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Our mission is to provide students—especially those in rural and underserved communities—with access to tools, skills, and knowledge to become future leaders, innovators, and creative thinkers.
The Benteh STEAM Academy is proud to be part of the Michael Tucker Learning Campus in Wasilla Alaska, a dynamic educational hub that also includes the Benteh Early Learning Academy (BELA) and Knik Charter School. Together, these programs provide a continuum of culturally enriched, high-quality education, empowering students from early childhood through high school to thrive academically, creatively, and personally.
Our Philosophy
At Benteh STEAM Academy, we believe that combining cutting-edge education with our Knik Tribal Values creates a learning environment where students thrive. We are committed to fostering curiosity, collaboration, and problem-solving through hands-on STEAM projects. By celebrating Alaska Native traditions and integrating them with modern technology, we equip students to approach challenges with creativity, respect, and innovation.
Our Programs
We provide a variety of educational opportunities and tools to engage students in meaningful learning experiences:
-
Alaska STEAM Hub (ASH): ASH helps rural middle and high schools across Alaska create their own Fabrication Labs with 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines. Students and educators gain hands-on experience with software tools like Tinkercad and Adobe Illustrator to bring their cultural designs to life. -
Subsistence & Hunter Safety (Kununi): Hands-on projects that honor Alaska Native knowledge, such as subsistence activities, traditional arts, and environmental stewardship. Learn more about Kununi
-
Robotics & Aviation (Horizon): Students learn the fundamentals of flight, programming, engineering, and robotics through real-world problem-solving challenges. Learn more about Horizon
-
Construction (Building for the Future): Interactive workshops using traditional woodworking paired with cutting edge tech and machinery in our state-of-the-art FAB Lab. Learn more about Building for the Future
